What is a Barcode ?

Have you noticed at any point some parallel lines on any of the product like ice-cream, cold-drinks, clothes, mobile etc? Have you ever wondered what these parallel lines are and what is its use?

Well it is nothing but a barcode. A barcode is a way of representing unique number of a product in visual form. Have a look at image below.

This type of image you might have noticed before on products. This is a barcode. A barcode is a unique number or identification given to a product. The barcode is always unique for a product. It means, say a particular number 123 is taken as a barcode for a product COKE 1 Liter bottle then this 123 number cannot be used by any other product. It is just like a roll number given to you when you were in school. Barcode is nothing but your unique roll number with which you are identified. In a market, a product is identified with its barcode. 

A barcode is always scanned by a scanner. These parallel lines you see are easily scanned by a scanner which reads them as a number. So let's say if i open NOTEPAD in my computer and scan this above barcode with a scanner, i will get a number written at the bottom which is 1234567890.

This is very useful at the time of billing different products like in supermarket. A product with a barcode and a scanner to scan that barcode makes billing for a business very easy and convenient.

क्या आपने किसी भी उत्पाद पर कुछ समानांतर रेखाओं पर ध्यान दिया है जैसे आइसक्रीम, कोल्ड-ड्रिंक, कपड़े, मोबाइल आदि? क्या आपने कभी सोचा है कि ये समानांतर रेखाएं क्या हैं और इसका उपयोग क्या है?

वैसे यह एक बारकोड के अलावा और कुछ नहीं है। एक बारकोड एक उत्पाद को दृश्य रूप में अद्वितीय संख्या का प्रतिनिधित्व करने का एक तरीका है। नीचे दी गई छवि पर एक नज़र डाले

इस प्रकार की छवि आपने पहले उत्पादों पर देखी होगी। यह एक बारकोड है। एक बारकोड एक विशिष्ट संख्या या पहचान है जो किसी उत्पाद को दी जाती है। किसी उत्पाद के लिए बारकोड हमेशा अद्वितीय होता है। इसका मतलब यह है कि अगर किसी विशेष नंबर को किसी उत्पाद के लिए बारकोड के रूप में लिया जाता है जैसे मान लें की  COKE 1 लीटर की बोतल को हमने 123 नंबर दे दिया , फिर इस 123 नंबर का उपयोग किसी अन्य उत्पाद द्वारा नहीं किया जा सकता है। यह एक रोल नंबर की तरह है, जब आप स्कूल में थे। बारकोड और कुछ नहीं बल्कि आपका यूनिक रोल नंबर है, जिसके साथ आप पहचाने जाते हैं। एक बाजार में, एक उत्पाद की पहचान उसके बारकोड से की जाती है।

एक बारकोड को हमेशा स्कैनर द्वारा स्कैन किया जाता है। आपके द्वारा देखी जाने वाली ये समानांतर रेखाएं एक स्कैनर द्वारा आसानी से स्कैन की जाती हैं जो उन्हें एक संख्या के रूप में पढ़ती हैं। तो मान लें कि अगर मैं अपने कंप्यूटर में NOTEPAD खोलता हूं और इस ऊपर दिए गए बारकोड को एक स्कैनर के साथ स्कैन करता हूं, तो मुझे नीचे लिखा नंबर मिलेगा जो 1234567890 है।

सुपरमार्केट जैसे विभिन्न उत्पादों की बिलिंग के समय यह बहुत उपयोगी है। एक बारकोड और स्कैनर के साथ एक व्यवसाय के लिए बिलिंग को बहुत आसान और सुविधाजनक बनाया जा सकता हे।
